The challenge

The steel lattice bridge, complete with laminated glass at the sides and an arched roof, was to be lifted into place in one piece. Delivered in several sections, the bridge was welded and assembled on-site. The lifting of the bridge required very precise planning as it was imperative to rule out any possibility of damage to the bridge during the lifting process and only a short time frame was available.

The solution

To eliminate any possibility of damage to the bridge during lifting, a modular spreading system was essential. Only a spreading system would be able to ensure that the steel cables ran absolutely parallel to the bridge, thus preventing them from coming into contact with, and damaging, the bridge. The crane service provider for this project was RIGA MAINZ who opted for a 500-t Terex CC2500-1 crawler crane – with a 54-metre main boom and 30-metre SL mast - and a 200-t Superlift counterweight, the latter due to the fact that the crane needed to transport the entire load across the construction site.
